Treinta prendas Thirty Garments
Or, the difference between owning a capsule and living one.
For years I stood in front of my closet and lost. Not because there was too little, but because there was too much to untangle at seven in the morning, when a sleepy brain reaches for the same safe three. Thirty garments hung there, most from the used market, most altered by my own hands: hemmed, taken in, re-dyed to sit right on my body. Rescued clothes, re-fitted clothes. And still I wore the same handful, week after week, while the rest waited on the rail.
I knew the capsule wardrobe as an idea: a small, deliberate closet that multiplies, one piece into many looks. I could recite the principle. I just couldn't practice it. The principle assumes a version of me who, at dawn, holds thirty garments in her head and finds the one combination that fits the weather, the day, the room. That version doesn't exist before tea. The looks that made sense on paper (deep green against camel, plum against black) stayed on paper. Theory I owned but never wore.
A key day: three outfits ready, each already inside the palette.
So I did what I do with every garment that doesn't quite fit: I took it in. I built the practice into a small tool. Each morning it checks the forecast for my city, asks what kind of day this is (a key day or an ordinary one) and lays out three combinations, skipping whatever I wore this week. Every rule in it is a rule I wrote; every pairing comes from a palette I chose. The technology moves fast so the morning can move slow. Soon I'll wire in my calendar too, so a key day arrives with the sharp look already on the rail and an ordinary one with the easy one. The point was never to own more; it was to finally use what I have: to be reintroduced to my own clothes, to wear the combinations I'd been too tired to assemble.
What surprised me most was which way I could point it. Almost all technology is built to sell you one more thing: one more garment, one more session. I built this one against that gravity. It spreads the wear so no piece gives out early, and it keeps handing back the ones I'd forgotten: care for a finite closet I already chose. The day it suggests buying something is the day it's broken, and I mean that as a specification.
Everything it holds about me stays on my laptop. I chose control over convenience, because a closet is intimate and has no reason to belong to anyone else. That, too, was mine to decide.
Here is what I want to be precise about, because the shorthand gets it wrong: AI didn't give me back my closet. Building the tool did. The taste is mine, the palette is mine, the hands that took in every seam are mine, and so is the hand that wrote the rules. What I made is closer to an alteration than an oracle: one more adjustment so that something I already owned finally fits my life.
The mornings are different now. Tea, the yoga mat, light coming up over the rail. Three combinations wait for me, and I pick one the way everything in this closet was made: by hand. Last week I wore plum against black, a look that had lived on paper for two years. It fit. Of course it fit; I'm the one who cut it.
El clóset nunca fue demasiado grande. Solo le faltaban caminos de entrada. The closet was never too big. It was only missing ways in.
Treinta prendas. Todas las estaciones. Por fin usadas.
Thirty garments. Every season. Finally worn.
